Cox Flexion Distraction

Cox Flexion-distraction is a relatively new form of chiropractic care. The technique is often used for people with disc problems, but can be used in other cases as well.

Flexion-distraction decompresses the discs in the lower spine with a series of slow, repetitive movements that mobilize the joints. This technique uses a table to restore movement to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal joints. It is a non-forced movement technique that works with the body’s natural movements to start healing. Additional benefits include transferring metabolites into the spinal disc, which decompresses inflamed spinal nerves and decreases the pressure between discs.

This type of treatment will loosen, lubricate and expand the spaces between the discs in your spine. These discs act the same way as shock absorbers in your car, cushioning your spine from the stress of walking, running, jumping or exercise. The treatment involves working on the entire spine. When working on the lower back, the table is usually unlocked to allow the doctor move the back in lateral and circular motion. This relieves pain, irritation and muscle spasms, helping the body heal.
